Legendary Litigator Attorney James Montgomery Sr. to Discuss New Book Full Circle: Race, Law & Justice – Inside My Life As Part of TWPF/IPE Nation Studies

James D. Montgomery Sr., one of the nation’s premier criminal and civil attorneys, will be the featured speaker this month during the 2018 Nation Studies series presented by Third World Press Foundation (TWPF) and the Institute of Positive Education (IPE). As part of the presentation, Montgomery will read from his recently released authorized biography Full Circle: Race, Law & Justice – Inside My Life coauthored by Walter M. Perkins and Michelle Thompson and published by Third World Press Foundation.

The legal giant and strategic genius is a top-tier civil rights attorney. He served as first Corporation Council for Chicago’s first Black mayor, Harold Washington, and was the principal and licensee for Johnny Cochran’s national law firm. Many remember him winning the civil trial for the family of slain Black Panther member Fred Hampton.

Full Circle is set against the racialized backdrop of Chicago and America over the last 60 years. In process since May 2015, the title resulted from the realization that many issues faced by the African American community decades ago remain problems today: police brutality, economic discrimination, educational inequality, and unfair housing practices, among others. Full Circle tells one man’s journey to realize the American Dream and the hell he went through to get there.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, at the Institute of Positive Education/Betty Shabazz Academy, 7825 S. Ellis Ave., from 3:00pm-5:00pm. A book signing will immediately follow. The

event is free and open to the public.

Nation Studies began in the early 1970s to provide a forum for authors, activists and artists to share their works. After years of dormancy, the Nation Studies series began again in 2015. The mission of TWPF and IPE is to make literature accessible to as many individuals as possible. The goal of the Nation Studies series is to inform and to stimulate thought and conversation, with an emphasis on providing young activists with a forum to exchange ideas as they formulate strategies for their work.

Noted author Useni Eugene Perkins kicked off the 2018 Nation Studies Series in January with a panel discussion of his new book Rise of the Phoenix: Voices from Chicago’s Black Struggle from 1960-1975.
