WHITAKER NAMED NEW SUPERINTENDENT

HARVEY, IL – Harvey School District 152 Board of Education recently announced the hiring of Dr. Sonya L. Whitaker as the new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Whitaker is responsible for establishing and maintaining the fiscal health of the school district, increasing the academic achievement levels of the students, making policy recommendations to the Board of Education, and appropriately allocating financial, technological and human resources.

“My vision for Harvey “…with almost surgical precision.” (Joe Daniels/Carolina Peacemaker) School District 152 is reflective of the potential that exists for the district to serve as a world-class learning environment for the students, parents and the entire staff,” said Dr. Whitaker in a released statement.

“It is important to recognize that the world is changing fast and in order for us to graduate students that are prepared to compete nationally and internationally, we must be innovative in our approaches to educating them and those that serve on their behalf. As I transition into my role as Superintendent of Schools for Harvey School District 152, it is my greatest desire to receive the support needed at the local, state and national levels so as to ensure that our students reach their fullest intellectual potential,” she said.

Before joining Harvey SD 152, Dr. Whitaker was the Superintendent of Schools at Fairmont SD 89 in Lockport, IL for over 6 years. At Schaumburg School District 54, Dr. Whitaker served in the capacity of Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Literacy, and became the Director for Academic Improvement.

Whitaker is a published author with a recently published book entitled: Is There Anybody That Can Teach Me How to Read? She is currently in the process of writing her second book in which she introduces what she identifies as the Six Core Competencies Deeply Engrained in Culturally Responsive School Board Members, Superintendents and School Leader.

Dr. Whitaker and her husband are the proud parents of two boys, ages 16 and 11.

Harvey School District 152 consists of the following elementary schools:

Riley Pre-K, Bryant, Sandburg, Maya Angelou, Lowell-Longfellow, Holmes, Whittier, and Gwendolyn Brooks.
