Four Dyett School Supporters Arrested at City Hall
Four protesters supporting Dyett High School as a “green tech” school were arrested after staging a sit-in at City Hall, officials said.
“We are protesting having sub education plans placed down our throat,” said Jaribu Lee, an organizer arrested July 29th who was accused of blocking elevators in the building at 121 N. LaSalle St. in downtown Chicago.
Lee said her group doesn’t believe it is getting a fair shake on its plans for Dyett.
Lee also said her group of parents and organizers support Dyett being a “green tech” neighborhood school that serves and partners with the DuSable Museum of African-American History and others.
As a “green tech” school, Dyett's academic focus would incorporate science curriculum meant to capitalize on its location in Washington Park. The school also would be a LEED-certified green building.
The group opposes two other plans for the school at 555 E. 51st St. One plan transforms it into a contract school, called Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy.
A third idea makes Dyett a sports-themed high school. That plan, submitted by a person brought in to phase out Dyett, came after the Chicago Public Schools deadline.
The Coalition to Revitalize Dyett has protested against the 2012 phase out plan at Dyett. The school had its final graduating class in June.
The city’s Board of Education is scheduled to vote on selecting a plan later this month.
