Detroit NAACP To Honor Kid Rock At Annual Dinner
DETROIT (AP) - Musician Kid Rock will be honored during the Detroit NAACP branch's annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner at Cobo Center.
The Macomb County native, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, is to receive the civil rights organization's Great Expectations Award Sunday night.
Detroit NAACP President Wendell Anthony says Ritchie was chosen for the honor because of his advocacy of the city. But the choice has been criticized by some who say the Grammy-nominated artist's use of the Confederate flag during stage performances runs counter to the NAACP's message.
To many, the flag is a symbol of racism and oppression of blacks in the South.
Civil Rights pioneer John Lewis will give the dinner's keynote speech.
Anthony expects the dinner to approach or reach its usual attendance of 10,000 people.
