...Patchy Dense Fog Developing During the Next Few Hours...
Patchy dense fog has developed across far southwest Virginia and
into northwest North Carolina. The fog is particularly dense along
the I-81 and I-77 corridors from Pulaski southwest to Chilhowie
and along I-77 from Max Meadows southward to the North Carolina
border. Visibilities in this area are highly variable and range
from near zero in spots to 6 miles or better in others. Generally,
the lowest visibilities will be found in the valleys and near
bodies of water as well as along some of the higher terrain and
ridges at or above 2500 feet.
An area of low clouds is slowly advecting southwest toward this
region with a southwestward moving cold front. As these clouds
arrive, the fog may tend to diminish somewhat later in the night.
On the other hand, if fog continues to become more widespread and
dense, it may be necessary to issue a Dense Fog Advisory for part
or all of this area.
As you drive through these sections of southwest Virginia and
northwest North Carolina, be prepared for areas of rapidly
changing visibility from unlimited in spots to near zero just a
little bit further down the road. When driving in these areas of
dense fog, reduce speed, use low beam headlights, and allow extra
distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Allow extra
time to reach your destination so you don`t have to be in a rush
in these kind of poor driving conditions.
