The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has extended
the
* Flood Advisory for...
Macon County in western North Carolina...
South central Swain County in western North Carolina...
* Until 100 AM EDT Friday.
* At 649 PM EDT, heavy rain over the previous 24 hours has caused
the Cullasaja River and associated tributaries to rise above
bankfull. Though the rivers are beginning to recede again,
additional showers and thunderstorms from this afternoon and
another potential rise this evening may cause additional rises on
area streams.
* Overall, streamgauges along the Little Tennessee River indicate
the stream remains above Action Stage levels indicative of Minor
Flooding along the river valley and streams and creeks that feed
into the river. Based on this information it is likely Minor
Flooding is also occurring on other primary streams across the
Advisory area.
* Minor flooding is defined as flooding of low-lying areas next to
streams, farmland, recreational areas, greenways, and boat access
ramps. Caution is advised anywhere near such areas.
* The following streamgauges are currently above Action Stage:
Little Tennessee River above NC 28 3 N Franklin.
Current Stage: 8.09 feet and falling slowly.
Action Stage: 7.5 feet.
Impacts: Farmland flooding is ongoing along the Little Tennessee
River Valley. A few low-water crossings are likely flooding.
Streamflows remain swift so people are encouraged to exercise
extreme caution near area streams.
Forecast: The Little Tennessee River will remain elevated but will
continue to recede this afternoon. However, additional rainfall
experienced this afternoon and more possible this evening and
overnight may cause the river to return to or stay near Action Stage
for an extended period of time.
* The following streams and associated tributaries remain elevated
and minor flooding issues may persist overnight: Little Tennessee
River, Cartoogechaye Creek, Cullasaja River, Tessentee Creek,
Coweeta Creek, Alarka Creek, Battle Creek, and Cowee Creek.
