Unity Parenting & Counseling opened the Ujima Village Shelter as an overnight homeless center for high school and college teens on Aug. 19, 2013, but the center suffered a fire this year in the south wing of their building and now local organizations are helping the shelter recover with donations.

100BMC Board President Carl Tutt said the 16th Annual Toy Drive & Holiday Party was meant to make Christmas a joyous time for individuals because in a lot of cases, it’s not for some families.
“We inherited a very difficult situation and in the last seven years we have closed budget gaps of about 2 billion. We’ve reduced our workforce by about fifteen percent and we’ve reduced our debt by about eleven percent,” said Preckwinkle.
The new hotel will open before Obama’s Presidential Library does, but Beach believes when it does open, it will attract many more visitors to the area who will be interested in staying at SOPHY.
