The Illinois Medical District (IMD) and American Red Cross of Illinois are partnering to draw attention to sickle cell disease and its treatment. During National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the organizations are calling on Chicagoans—especially minority communities affected by sickle cell disease—to donate blood to treat conditions such as sickle cell anemia and reduce disparities in health care for minorities.
Confront Art—which connects artists to social justice causes to create public art displays—is announcing today its inaugural exhibition SEEINJUSTICE, which will be open to the public beginning October 1 in Union Square. The SEEINJUSTICE series will feature three sculptures by Chris Carnabuci: “FLOYD,” “BREONNA,” and “JOHN LEWIS.”

(NASDAQ: FB) for its 501 (c)(3), McBride Sisters SHE CAN Fund. Facebook has made a commitment to leverage its resources to provide 100 SHE CAN Fund grantees and Black women entrepreneurs with $20,000 in Facebook advertising credits, as well as strategic guidance via Facebook Elevate, a community and learning program created to support and accelerate the growth of Black and Latinx & Hispanic- owned businesses.

Dr. Theresa Dixon founded the Gloria J. Taylor Foundation in 1997 in honor of her mother who was the first Black and the first woman to hold an elected office in Harvey. Taylor was first elected in Harvey as the Park Commissioner. She saw there weren’t activities or places for the youth to go. She became involved in the community and had a park built. Taylor also developed academic programs for the youth in Harvey. Taylor had a heart for the community and believed in giving back and supporting.

The Sickle Cell Awareness Month is recognized in September and the Community Blood Center commemorated the month by hosting blood drives to encourage people of color to donate blood. The Community Blood Center has locations in Chicago, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1955 to supply blood to hospitals in the Midwest region. It relies on volunteer blood donors. It was extended to Chicago in 2018 to help and engage the community with blood donation.

Pigment International™ has been selected as a Field Foundation grant recipient for its Pigment Magazine under its programmatic area of media and storytelling. The organization will receive $35K in funding to cover the cost of editors, writers and graphic designers for the publication. Launched in 2018, the publication is a glossy, oversized magazine that highlights the stories of Black artists, collectors, curators and others in the Black art ecosystem.

The traveling clinic is stopping at more than a dozen locations on and off school campuses, including stops at several football “Classics” — games widely known for popular halftime shows featuring battles between school marching bands — that attract students, alumni and community members.
