The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Illinois Department of Public Health are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella, a bacteria that is a common cause of foodborne illness. As of September 15, 2023, CDPH has identified 20 individuals with Salmonella infections who ate prepared food from a taqueria in Carniceria Guanajuato located at 3140 N California in Chicago. Of these, 10 people have been hospitalized. Carniceria Guanajuato voluntarily closed the taqueria on September 8, 2023 and is cooperating with CDPH to determine a source of the infections. If you have purchased prepared food from the taqueria or the prepared food section of the grocery store since August 29, 2023, discard it and do not eat it. If you ate food purchased from the prepared food section (taqueria or prepared foods in the grocery section) since August 29, 2023, you may have been exposed to Salmonella.
In April 2023, Cook County and South Suburban College (SSC) partnered to establish the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) on the college’s Main Campus. The SSC partnership with Cook County, funded primarily through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant, has significantly impacted recycling in Southland communities, processing over 40,000 pounds of materials in just four months of CHaRM facility operations. The impactful collaboration has attracted a new partner, The Recycling Partnership.
Janie Bennett, born June 13, 1935, in Maotee, Mississippi, to Rinda Bennett and Curtis Barr, passed peacefully on August 29, 2023, in Beaumont, Texas. Janie was a selfless woman guided by her faith in Christ. Her services will be held at the Harold Washington Cultural Center on Monday, September 18, with a wake at 10 a.m. and a funeral at 11 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to A.R. Leaks and Sons.
