U.S. Atty. Gen. Calls Rise in Heroin Overdoses ‘Urgent Public Health Crisis’ Vows Mix of Enforcement, Treatment

Calling the rise in overdose deaths from heroin and other prescription pain-killers an “urgent public health crisis,” Attorney General Eric Holder vowed Monday that the Justice Department would combat the epidemic through a mix of enforcement and treatment efforts. As an added step, the Attorney General is also encouraging law enforcement agencies to train and equip their personnel with the life-saving, overdose-reversal drug known as naloxone.

President Obama’s "My Brother's Keeper" Remarks

Introduced by Christian Champagne, 18, a senior at Hyde Park Career Academy, Chicago, President Barack Obama, last week delivered a speech unveiling his “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative at the White House, surrounded by African American and Latino young men, some of which are participants in the University of Chicago Crime Lab initiative called “Becoming a Man” (BAM), a program for at-risk youth, that served as the inspiration for Obama’s newly introduced program.

A secret meeting between a representative of the Wyoming chapter of the NAACP and a Ku Klux Klan organizer ended with the Klan organizer paying $50 to join the civil rights organization, participants said.

First Lady Michelle Obama to Ask Everyone to “Drink Up” with More Water

First Lady Michelle Obama has joined the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and actress Eva Longoria in PHA’s new effort to encourage everyone to drink more water, an easy choice to improve health and well-being every day. The effort brings together more than a dozen organizations committed to encouraging everyone to drink more water more often. According to the CDC, approximately one fourth of children do not drink any water on a given day. This new effort will remind people that drinking more water helps you have more energy to do more, longer and with better focus.

Life Time Tri Chicago Engages Chicago’s Youth

For more than three decades, experienced triathletes and determined newcomers have flocked to the shores of Lake Michigan for one of the largest triathlons in the world. Life Time Tri Chicago is an action-packed tour along Chicago’s lakefront, offering kids, supersprint, sprint and international distance courses. Nearly 9,000 pro, elite amateur and first-time triathletes competed, and more than 15,000 spectators attended the events which took place on Saturday, Aug. 24. McDonald’s Plays Active Role in Chicagoland Communities

The Black McDonald’s Operators Association of Chicagoland (BMOA) is serving Chicago’s communities in and outside of their restaurants. According to its’ website, the Chicagoland BMOA is made up of 15 Chicago and northwest Indiana McDonald’s owners who take pride in providing leadership while creating and nurturing their African-American communities while providing education and health-focused initiatives.

Mayor Emanuel Visits Greencorps Youth Program

Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently visited with students in the City’s Greencorps Youth program, the $2.5 million program that is providing 600 summer jobs for at-risk students attending 15 Chicago Public High Schools.
