The West Side of Chicago has a 17-year lifespan gap compared to downtown, widening to 25 years for those with chronic mental illness. Historical disinvestment in the communities of the West Side of Chicago has long had a significant impact on community wellness and the behavioral health needs of its residents, particularly among Black and Latinx communities. Due to these many disparities, behavioral health organizations across the city have joined together to fill the gap and provide a continuum of services, for both mental and physical health needs. One of these new partnerships is Collaborative Bridges. The West Side organization recently held a groundbreaking celebration for a new Wellness Center in West Garfield Park at 4223 W. Lake Street. Over 80 people including elected leaders, collaboratives, community members and local partners attended the event. The 17,000 square foot facility, when complete, will bring mental health resources to the community and will serve as a beacon of hope for people who are living with mental health conditions and their families.

A new partnership between the City Colleges of Chicago and Chicago State University aims to remove the barriers students may experience when it comes to transferring from a two-year college to a four-year college. n estimated 321,566 children in the United States lost a parent to drug overdose from 2011 to 2021, according to a study published in JAMA Psychiatry. The rate of children who experienced this loss more than doubled during this period, from approximately 27 to 63 children per 100,000. The highest number of affected children were those with non-Hispanic white parents, but communities of color and tribal communities were disproportionately affected. The study was a collaborative effort led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Union League Boys & Girls Clubs (ULBGC) with the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) have been jointly awarded a $250,000.00 grant to support specialized Trauma-Informed Care training and programming at the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs’ stand-alone Club One and Baretto Clubs located in Pilsen and Humboldt Park, respectively. The grant will be utilized by ULBGC with three UIC partners: UIC Law School Restorative Justice Project, which promotes the values and principles of restorative justice and the peaceful resolution of disputes through educational programs; the UIC Urban Youth Trauma Center, which promotes and disseminates comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated care for youth affected by trauma; and the UIC Office of Community Engagement and Neighborhood Health Partnerships, which promote health equity, participates in the revitalization of underserved communities, and builds leadership capacity through service, education, and research.
Governor JB Pritzker joined leaders from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program at Englewood STEM High School to announce the fifth year of CREATE grant funding. As part of the 75th street Corridor Improvement Project (CIP), the CREATE Program and its partners have donated over $600,000 since 2019 as part of their educational commitment to communities within the 75th street CIP corridor. This year’s grants will be dispersed among nine awardees including Chicago Public Schools, Leo High School, The Museum of Science and Industry, and the Chicago Public Library Foundation.
