PULLMAN COMMUNITY CENTER STILL NEEDS $3 MILLION TO BE DEBT FREE

Community members and investors in Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood recently gathered at a press conference to celebrate the construction of the Pullman Community Center at 104th St. and Woodlawn Ave. Once completed, the community center will offer 135,000 square feet of climate controlled, indoor sports playing fields and courts. Nearly 1,100 people are expected to come through the Pullman Community Center on a weekly basis.

According to the Bureau of Prisons, there are 207,847 people incarcerated in federal prisons. Roughly half (48.6 percent) are in for drug offenses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are 1,358,875 people in state prisons. Of them, 16 percent have a drug crime as their most serious offense. Moreover, data from a national study in five major American cities indicated that at the time of arrest, 63% to 83% of people had drugs in their system.
