Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Reports Out Legislation to Codify Community Advantage Program, Strengthen SBA Lending Programs, and Address Urgent Needs of America’s Small Businesses

By a vote of 18-1, the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship today reported out eleven bills that legislate important improvements across the Small Business Administration (SBA). Bipartisan legislation in the package builds on the Biden-Harris small business agenda to expand access to capital for underserved communities and increase small dollar loans. After more than ten years, Congress is legislating to make permanent the Community Advantage Pilot Program, which is SBA’s only lending program with an explicit focus on reaching underserved borrowers. In addition, this will mark the first increase in the number of SBLC licenses in 40 years. Legislation reported out makes significant changes to SBA’s lending programs by responsibly enlarging the SBLC program and codifying sensible underwriting and affiliation standards.

Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi announces that the deadline to apply for exemptions is Friday, August 4, 2023. Exemptions are property tax savings that contribute to lowering a homeowner’s property tax bill. The most common is the Homeowner Exemption, saving a property owner an average of $950 dollars each year. The savings from exemptions are reflected on a homeowner’s second installment property tax bill.

The Center for Hard to Recycle Materials at South Suburban College Calling All Residents for Households Recyclables

Cook County and South Suburban College (SSC) partnered in April 2023 to establish a grant-funded Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) on the SSC Main Campus in South Holland, IL. This innovative facility provides area residents, businesses, and organizations with a dedicated recycling drop-off point, effectively diverting millions of pounds of waste and hard-to-recycle items from local landfills and water systems. Since its opening on April 22, the CHaRM center has processed 36,804 lbs. of materials.
