CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE CENTER ANNOUNCES EXPANDED OPEN HOUSE PROGRAMMING
The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) announced programming for this year’s Open House Chicago (OHC), a free festival that provides behind-the-scenes access to some of the city’s most historically, culturally and architecturally important sites. The 2023 event, which will take place October 13-15, will feature 170+ locations across 20+ Chicago neighborhoods. Additionally, for the first time, the CAC will host two Friday events, including one exclusively for CAC members.

The Walt Disney Archives and Semmel Exhibitions, a worldwide exhibit presenter and producer, announced today that Disney100: The Exhibition will open at the 35,000-square-foot Exhibition Hub Art Center (formerly known as the Windy City Fieldhouse) in Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 18. National and local Comcast leaders joined Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Public Library (CPL) Commissioner Chris Brown today to announce a $250,000 donation to the Chicago Public Library Foundation to fund digital navigators at 26 city library branches. Digital navigators are professionals who link Chicagoans to resources that can help them build the digital skills needed to succeed in school, participate in the workforce and connect to programs that can help them access and pay for broadband Internet service at home.

Chicago Department of Public Health Investigating Outbreak of Salmonella
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Illinois Department of Public Health are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella, a bacteria that is a common cause of foodborne illness. As of September 15, 2023, CDPH has identified 20 individuals with Salmonella infections who ate prepared food from a taqueria in Carniceria Guanajuato located at 3140 N California in Chicago. Of these, 10 people have been hospitalized. Carniceria Guanajuato voluntarily closed the taqueria on September 8, 2023 and is cooperating with CDPH to determine a source of the infections. If you have purchased prepared food from the taqueria or the prepared food section of the grocery store since August 29, 2023, discard it and do not eat it. If you ate food purchased from the prepared food section (taqueria or prepared foods in the grocery section) since August 29, 2023, you may have been exposed to Salmonella.
South Suburban College Center for Hard to Recycle Materials Offered New Grant to Enhance Recycling Efforts in South Suburban Cook County
In April 2023, Cook County and South Suburban College (SSC) partnered to establish the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) on the college’s Main Campus. The SSC partnership with Cook County, funded primarily through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant, has significantly impacted recycling in Southland communities, processing over 40,000 pounds of materials in just four months of CHaRM facility operations. The impactful collaboration has attracted a new partner, The Recycling Partnership.
Chicagoans Mourns The Loss Of Janie Bennett
Janie Bennett, born June 13, 1935, in Maotee, Mississippi, to Rinda Bennett and Curtis Barr, passed peacefully on August 29, 2023, in Beaumont, Texas. Janie was a selfless woman guided by her faith in Christ. Her services will be held at the Harold Washington Cultural Center on Monday, September 18, with a wake at 10 a.m. and a funeral at 11 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to A.R. Leaks and Sons.

Truist Foundation announced a $1 million grant to STRIVE, a national nonprofit that provides free job training and wraparound career support services for people facing barriers to quality employment.
