CHICAGO HOUSING AUTHORITY RELEASES FINAL CABRINI NOW PLAN TO CREATE 4,100 NEW HOMES
Community-Driven Plan Kicks Off the Next Chapter of Redevelopment in Cabrini-Green,
CHICAGO – The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) recently released the final Cabrini NOW Development Framework Plan, a community-driven development roadmap for around 4,100 new homes across CHA’s remaining 43 acres in Cabrini-Green.
This plan reflects the outcomes of a year-long planning process and community engagement effort with hundreds of residents. Cabrini NOW was developed in partnership with the Cabrini-Green Local Advisory Council, the Near North Unity Program, the 27th Ward, and City of Chicago agencies. It builds on the more than 3,500 homes CHA has brought back to Cabrini-Green since the early 2000s.
The plan groups CHA’s 16 sites into four subareas, Rowhomes, Division, Larabee, and Sedgwick, each with targets for housing, public open space and street connections. Across all four, the plan calls for:
• 4,100 units of mixed-income housing, from townhomes to taller buildings, of which 33–40% will be CHA units, up to 20% affordable, and up to 50% market rate.
• 9.1 acres of new public open space, including a green corridor that links Durso Park, the Jesse White Community Center and Seward Park.
• Reconnected streets, rebuilding sidewalks and creating safer routes around Skinner North Elementary School.
• Honoring Cabrini-Green’s legacy through the preservation and rehabilitation of vacant historic rowhomes and community programming.
“Every year that CHA-owned land sits vacant in Cabrini-Green, it’s a cost to the families waiting to come home and to a city that needs housing,” said Chicago Housing Authority CEO Keith Pettigrew. “Cabrini NOW changes the starting point. Residents told us what they need built, and developers can now see exactly what needs delivering. Our job is to use this framework to get development off the ground.”
Throughout 2027, CHA will begin seeking zoning changes and releasing solicitations for development partners. Partners will be recommended by CHA and the Near North Working Group, with approval from the CHA Board of Commissioners.
The final report, appendices, community engagement summaries, and a summary of changes from the draft are available at http://thecha.org/cabrininow.
