Stylist Creates Luxury Eyewear Brand

Fashion has been Timothy Hawkins’ thing since he was a kid. It has been embedded in him since he was a child. He remembered being younger and wanting an Armani suit because fashion stylist June Ambrose put Jay-Z in one for an album cover. He credits his mother, a native New Yorker from Brooklyn with his love of fashion.

“I was a military kid wearing things like Karl Kani and Coogi, not even knowing what it was, but it’s always been my thing since I was a kid; it’s how I communicated, it’s my form of art, it’s just something I love,” he said.

Hawkins was able to make fashion his career and build a reputation for himself. He has been a fashion stylist for the past 16 years. He started off working in television and film production, with The Steve Harvey Show, then moving on to the Judge Mathis Show. He has also worked on Power and Saturdays. Hawkins also has a full service styling company called Lamar & Co, where he specializes in fashion buying, styling, consignment, closet organizing and creative directing for his clients. He also has a full service glam squad to service those clients.

Hawkins launched Eye Wigs Luxury Eyewear in 2025, as a 36th birthday gift for himself. He said he wanted to start the company because he wanted something outside of his styling that still spoke to him and incorporated his love of fashion. He wanted to get corrective vision surgery, but was afraid to do the procedure. He has always had a collection of eyeglasses, which he called his eye wigs. Similar to the way women change their hairstyle to match their outfits, Hawkins changed his eyeglasses to match his outfits.

Hawkins acknowledges that there are not a lot of Black owned eyewear companies, maybe 20 or less. He said he is happy to be in that number, creating something he likes and loves and something that speaks to him. He said that people love the fit, they love the weight of the glasses, and they love the packaging. He has been very intentional about how the package looks and how it feels. He said that he is grateful that people are gravitating to Eye Wigs and that they want to invest and support his small business.

Hawkins said that his inspiration for the styles and colors that the frame are available in come from clothing. He set out to create glasses that would go with his outfits. He said that he lives outside of the box and colors outside of the lines and wanted funky pieces that speak before he even says a word.

Hawkins also has hidden messages inside of his glasses. For his first collection, he put “speak what you seek until you see what you said.” He said that message is something he has carried his whole life. Each pair of frames has an affirmation around vision and sight embedded into the frames. He said it is something that sets him apart. He said he is big on speaking things until he sees them.

“I’m big on asking my big God for the extraordinary and letting him work it out. I’m big on asking God for what I want, I’m big on speaking things into existence and I wanted to share my love of faith in a creative way with people who purchase my frames,” he said.

Hawkins is preparing to launch his second collection and working on his summer collection. He said he will continue to grow his brand and create visibility and awareness. He said there might be some celebrity collaborations coming up. Eye Wigs accept insurance such as the HSA (health savings account) and FSA (flexible spending account).  For the first collection the opticals are $145 and the sunglasses are $155.
