Exemption applications open, Assessor’s Office hosts outreach events to help homeowners receive property tax savings
In March and April, the Cook County Assessor’s Office will host more than 30 events to help homeowners save on their property taxes by applying for exemptions.
Exemptions contribute to lowering a homeowner’s property tax bill. The most common is the Homeowner Exemption, which saves the typical property owner $950 dollars each year.
“If you want to avoid long lines in the sweltering summer heat, apply for your exemptions now,” said Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi. “I talk to people every day who are missing their exemptions, and missing out on hundreds of dollars in property tax savings.”
Homeowners must apply for some exemptions each year, while others automatically renew.
Homeowners can apply online, but those who need help with their application have many in-person options available. They can schedule an appointment at the Assessor’s Office downtown or branch locations at https://www.cookcountyassessoril.gov/appt.
The Assessor’s Office will also host virtual events in both English and Spanish to explain how exemption applications work. These will take place in English on March 25, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. and in Spanish on March 26, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. They will be available to stream via the CCAO’s Facebook and Youtube.
The Assessor’s Office will also host more than 30 in-person events in March and April to assist homeowners.
