PGC Doors Celebrates Grand Opening

By Tia Carol Jones

PGC Doors recently celebrated the grand opening of their location at 2450 S. State St. The business was founded by Tyrone E. Powell, Jr. and his wife Marceda in 2019 as Powell Painting and Decorating, then transitioned to Powell Group Corporation as a way to expand the business and its offerings.

Marceda said that expanding the business to PGC Doors means that the company can sell commercial doors, frames and hardware. The facility in Bronzeville is 4,000 square feet, inside the HIRE360 building, which they are utilizing rent free.

Marceda said she sees it as another opportunity for the business to scale. HIRE360 helps Minority Owned and Women Owned Businesses (MBE/WBE) by providing capital, mentoring and resources so that those businesses can expand recruitment and employment opportunities.

Tyrone said that having their company housed in the same building as HIRE360 enables PGC Doors to also have access to HIRE360 and their expertise and rolodex to support and advice. He said it is like having a one-stop-shop for support, which is very helpful to a business that is beginning its seventh year.

Marceda said that they have been given access to grants that without HIRE360, they wouldn’t have known anything about. Marceda said the support they have received from HIRE360 has been invaluable and Tyrone describes HIRE360 as a godsend.

Marceda said that HIRE360’s support of their business has been critical to the success of PGC Doors. She said it was very important in the beginning, helping them with things like business insurance. She said that as the business grows and they want to scale and go into new types of business and new avenues, like clean and renewable energy, HIRE360 will be able to help them even more than they already have. She said she anticipates PGC Doors’ partnership with HIRE360 will lead to more opportunities for the company to grow and expand.

“The support system has been invaluable as well as the directions they can point you in,” Tyrone said. He added that any time there is a challenge, he and Marceda are able to tap into the expertise of the people at HIRE360, which makes the challenge seem not as insurmountable as it was in the beginning.

PGC Doors is a family business, with Tyrone and Marceda’s blended family, which now also includes Marceda’s oldest daughter working as a project manager. Their oldest grandson is working at the warehouse and is learning the family business. Marceda said that he is engaged and learning the business while he is in high school.

“We want him to stay engaged in the company so that it is a part of his life, part of his DNA. We want him to continue to take classes and just learn more about this craft of doors, frames and hardware,” Marceda said.

PGC Doors is also investing in professional development of their employees. They are sending the team to classes at the Doors Hardware Institute so they can receive additional training. The hope is that the team will become subject matter experts when it comes to doors, frames and hardware. Marceda said that the training will strengthen their ability to become leaders within the PGC Doors company. She said that is the biggest part of their succession plan.

During the grand opening of PGC Doors, the company received a contract from Related Midwest to supply steel stiffened doors and hardware to a building on the North side of the city. Marceda and Tyrone Powell are anticipating more contracts and opportunities to come in the future. Tyrone said his family and the company are truly blessed.
