Commissioner Donna Miller Convenes First Meeting of Chicago–Cook County Task Force to Reduce Violence Against Women

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller helped convene the first meeting of the Chicago–Cook County Task Force to Reduce Violence Against Women, marking a critical step forward in strengthening protections and advancing coordinated solutions for survivors of domestic violence.

The task force brings together elected officials, justice system leaders, county and city departments, and community stakeholders to develop comprehensive recommendations aimed at reducing violence against women across Chicago and Cook County. This initiative was formally established by Commissioner Miller and Alderwoman Silvana Tabares through joint city and county resolutions, underscoring a shared commitment to addressing this urgent public safety and public health crisis.

“This Task Force reflects our collective moral responsibility to protect our residents—especially women—prevent further harm, and save lives,” said Commissioner Miller. “The conversations that began today will lead to meaningful policy recommendations and real action in the years ahead.”

Also in attendance were several of her Cook County Board colleagues, Commissioner Alma Anaya, Commissioner Tara Stamps, and Commissioner Keisha McCaskill, along with Clerk of the Circuit Court Mariyana T. Spyropoulos, and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. Representatives from key county offices and agencies were present, including the Cook County Board President appointee, the State’s Attorney’s Office, Public Guardian’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, Cook County Health and Hospitals System, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Judge.

City leadership was represented by multiple Chicago Alderpersons, City Clerk Anna Valencia, and city departments that are expected to sit on the task force as its structure is finalized.

At the meeting, recognition was given to Alderwoman Tabares and Commissioner Miller for their leadership in advancing this initiative, as well as to County Commissioners Anaya, Degnen, and Gainer for their work in helping form the Task Force and their continued commitment to addressing domestic violence.

It is expected that the Task Force will submit a final report with recommendations by this summer.
