Congressman Krishnamoorthi Brings UIC Student Whose Father was Deported after Being Detained at Broadview ICE Facility to State of the Union Address

(Washington, DC) On Tuesday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) attended President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address with Jaime, a 21-year-old University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) student from Mount Prospect. Jaime’s father was detained at Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Broadview facility for four days after masked federal agents seized him outside his home in October 2025. Jaime’s father was then exposed to inhumane conditions within the facility, where he was packed into a windowless room with 60 other men, forced to sleep on the floor or standing up, and denied showers. He was coerced into signing a "voluntary departure” form despite repeatedly asking officials inside Broadview to see a judge and his children, who also lost their mother in early 2025 after a battle with cancer. Jaime’s father now lives in Mexico City.

“The ordeal Jaime has undergone in the past year is horrifying, yet it is becoming a terrifying norm in Donald Trump’s America,” Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. “What happened to Jaime’s father — being tracked down by masked agents, held in inhumane conditions without full due process, and ultimately coerced into ‘voluntarily’ self-deporting from the country, leaving Jaime in charge of his 17- and 13-year-old sisters — is the byproduct of unnecessary cruelty and little to no oversight and accountability. I want to thank Jaime for joining me in Washington Tuesday and for his bravery and willingness to speak out and call attention to these dangerous militarized immigration raids. While Donald Trump used 107 minutes to spread lies about himself and his administration, I’ll never stop fighting to tell the stories of Jaime and other Illinoisans who have been hurt by Trump’s DHS.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi continues to pursue oversight and accountability for ICE, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Congressman Krishnamoorthi inspected the Broadview facility last fall after being denied entry and being threatened with police intervention by ICE last summer. Throughout Operation Midway Blitz, the congressman has introduced several pieces of legislation, including the Stop Excessive Force in Immigration Act and the No Private Bounty Hunters Act, as well as sending more than 15 letters to federal officials outlining his concerns.
