Clerk Mariyana T. Spyropoulos and the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court Celebrate Black History Month
Yesterday, the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, under the leadership of Clerk Mariyana T. Spyropoulos, hosted its annual Black History Month celebration, marking this year’s national theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” The program honored Black leadership and public service, recognizing individuals whose work continues to strengthen Cook County’s civic life and justice system.
During the ceremony, Clerk Spyropoulos presented the Office’s Black History Month Leadership Awards to U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis; Former Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans; the Honorable John Fairman, Associate Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County (Fifth Municipal District); Toi Salter, CEO and Founder of Salter Financial Management; and two employees of the Clerk’s Office recognized for more than 40 years of dedicated service to Cook County residents.
“As we commemorate a century of formally celebrating Black History Month, we are reminded that this observance is about both reflecting on the past and inspiring future generations to carry forward the work of progress, justice and equality,” said Clerk Spyropoulos. “It is my privilege to recognize today’s awardees, whose leadership and service continue to make an impact across Cook County.”
Audrina Sinclair, morning anchor at CBS News Chicago, served as emcee, and Former Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans delivered keynote remarks.
The program also featured performances by the Clerk of the Circuit Court Choir and Zion Ali, a Chicago-based artist. Light refreshments were provided by Chef Lorene DeVaroe, owner of The Sole Ingredient Catering, a Black woman-owned small business based in Chatham, with support from the Clerk’s Office African American Employee Committee.
The Clerk’s Office Black History Month celebration reflects Cook County’s commitment to recognizing and preserving African American history and to honoring the leaders and public servants whose contributions continue to shape Chicago and Cook County.
