CALUMET CITY RECORDS ZERO HOMICIDES IN 2025

AND MAJOR REDUCTIONS IN NUMEROUS SERIOUS CRIMES

(Calumet City, IL) Thaddeus Jones- Mayor of Calumet City- is expressing his admiration, confidence, and continued support of the Calumet City Police Department amid the growing reduction in serious crimes throughout the thirty thousand resident town.

Upon being elected in 2021, the mayor inherited a police department that lacked firm leadership, resources, and sworn police personnel that traditionally experienced serious problems around diversity. However, today those negative dynamics have undergone a complete 360 turnaround that resulted in lower crime rates including that of zero homicides over the past 14 months.

One of the first major moves in which the mayor pushed forward upon being sworn in was the appointment of Kevin Kolosh as the permanent police chief of Calumet City. The mayor and police chief have worked tirelessly to better equip the rank and files not only with physical resources, but with enhanced training.

“I’m immensely proud of the hard work that Chief Kolosh has demonstrated in ensuring that our rank and file officers are fully supported by our administration. I’m grateful to the city council for joining me in taking bold measures through significant investments to transition our police department into a regional leader in which other local police departments are now benchmarking.” says Mayor Jones

Among the remarkable statistics is the huge drop in homicides that often plague small communities within Cook County. The mayor and police chief credits community policing among other factors that have led to this specific reduction.

Mayor Jones adds,” I, along with Chief Kolosh, have made a collective commitment to our residents that we would not only staff our detective division with top notch officers who are firmly trained, but also a community policing division that would provide the best intelligence necessary to prevent and solve serious crimes. Chief Kolosh has assembled a great leadership team within the department that reflects every facet of the community and who has exhibited best in class supervision.

Among the statistical categories in which Calumet City witness crimes reductions from 2024 to 2025 include:

-100% reduction in homicides

-13% reduction in Aggravated Battery with a firearm

-54% reduction in Aggravated vehicular jackings/vehicular jackings

- 25% Aggravated discharge of a firearm/reckless discharge of a firearm

- 20% reduction in Battery

- 11% reduction in retail theft

Chief Kevin Kolosh adds, “The reduction in crime is credited to the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Calumet City Police Department. The reductions are the result of focused enforcement, increased visibility, and proactive patrol strategies throughout the city. 2025 was the first year since 2019 that the Calumet City Police Department operated at full staffing levels. Reaching full staffing has allowed us to increase proactive patrols, reduce response times, and better serve our community, and it has played a key role in the positive outcomes we are seeing.”

Chief Kolosh concludes, “Our successes are not only driven by proactive policing — they are also the result of the strong leadership of Mayor Thaddeus Jones, the cooperation of the City Council, and partnerships we have built through meaningful outreach efforts that we continue to carry out in the community.”
