Returning for the 13th year to Run, Walk, and Raise Awareness About Breast Cancer Early Detection & Getting Regular Mammogram Screens

 

Community 5K walk & run set for Saturday, August 29, 2026, aims to honor survivors, educate participants, and inspire early detection across Chicago's South Side


Runners, walkers, and community members will gather on the South Side of Chicago this summer for the Beyond A Mammogram: Hyde Park 5K, a community run/walk fundraiser dedicated to raising awareness about breast health and promoting early cancer detection through regular mammogram screenings. The event will take place Saturday, August 29, 2026, at a new location - the historic 63rd Street / Jackson Park near the pavilion, with check-in opening at 7:00 a.m. and the race beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Organized by Health Research and Awareness NFP, a 501(c)(3) organization, with the goal of bringing women, families, and the community together to walk, run, raise awareness, and encourage women to get their mammogram screenings, which will save lives. The 5K brings together survivors, families, healthcare advocates, and neighbors for a morning of movement and community connection. Proceeds and community engagement generated by the event support the organization’s mission to honor survivors, educate the public, and inspire action around early breast cancer detection.

“My husband and I made a commitment, literally as I was sitting in the chemotherapy chair during my final treatment, to help other families connect and work together to survive breast cancer. The tumult of cancer happens to a family, and so does the grace, particularly from the impact of early detection,” states Ontisar Freelain, organizer of the Beyond A Mammogram: Hyde Park 5K, founder of Health Research and Awareness, and a breast cancer survivor.

The event is open to runners and walkers of all ages and experience levels. In addition to the timed 5K course through the Hyde Park lakefront area, participants can expect a festive, family-friendly atmosphere with community resources, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with breast health awareness advocates survivors, and corporate and community partners, like South Shore Golf Club. “By funding local researchers, organizations, and educational programs, this event directly supports Hyde Park and the South Side of Chicago. Partnering with neighborhood wellness initiatives multiplies our impact, helping families achieve and sustain better health.,” concludes Freelain.
