Organization honors the legacy of longtime leader Diane Doherty, whose advocacy shaped food justice across Illinois.
Chicago, IL -- After more than three decades of service, the Illinois Hunger Coalition (IHC) announced that it will wind down operations and officially close its doors this fall. Founded in 1988, IHC has been a statewide leader in the fight against hunger and food insecurity, serving Illinois families through community organizing, advocacy, education, and direct assistance.
For nearly 30 years, IHC was led by Diane Doherty, a tireless advocate whose leadership shaped state and federal policies that continue to protect families in need. Diane passed away this summer, leaving behind a powerful legacy of grassroots organizing and unwavering commitment to food justice.
“In her quiet, effective way, Diane was a true Good Samaritan to so many needy folks in and around Chicago and downstate,” said Fr. Bill Vanecko, Board Chair of the Illinois Hunger Coalition. “At her funeral mass, I read the Good Samaritan gospel because it was so descriptive and providential.”
Diane’s leadership was marked by fierce advocacy and a deep belief in empowering communities most affected by hunger to lead the fight for solutions. “Her vision, persistence, and compassion created lasting change in Illinois and beyond. As we close this chapter, we honor her legacy by urging others to continue this essential work,” added Fr. Bill.
Throughout its history, IHC has helped thousands of families access programs such as SNAP and WIC, trained community leaders, and advanced statewide collaborations to address the root causes of hunger and poverty. While the organization is closing, the need remains urgent.
“We know the fight against hunger is far from over,” Fr. Bill continued. “We call on advocates, policymakers, and organizations across Illinois to keep pushing forward—to protect and expand the safety net, reduce poverty, and ensure every family has the dignity of food security.”
The Illinois Hunger Coalition expresses profound gratitude to its donors, partners, volunteers, and community members who have supported the organization since 1988.
