Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon Advocates for Federal Support of Election Infrastructure in Washington, D.C.
Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon traveled to the nation’s Capital with fellow clerks from Illinois and across the nation to meet with U.S. Congressional leaders to make a unified appeal for increased federal funding for local Election Infrastructure.
Clerk Gordon is part of a nationwide coalition of hundreds of elected officials and election administrators advocating for Congress to restore federal funding for election infrastructure and security to the 2020 level of $400 million in the 2026 Appropriations bill. This funding, authorized under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), is critical for maintaining secure, efficient, and accessible elections.
"As election threats continue to evolve and increase, sustained federal investment is critical to help protect the integrity of our democratic process,” said Clerk Gordon.
In recent years, federal support for election infrastructure has declined, placing additional strain on local jurisdictions. The requested funds will enable jurisdictions like Cook County—the largest election jurisdiction in Illinois—to modernize voting equipment, enhance cybersecurity measures, provide essential training for election staff and poll workers, and ensure voters have the resources needed for safe and efficient elections.
“I am proud to stand with election officials from across our nation to emphasize the urgent need for these resources, because our Democracy depends on it," said Gordon.
