(Chicago, IL) Stephanie Coleman- Alderman of Chicago’s 16th Ward- has willingly taken the lead in the promotion of Diabetes Awareness Month here in Chicago. Diabetes remains a leading cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness — and adults with diabetes face twice the risk of heart disease and stroke compared to those without it.

“This is more than a public relations campaign — it’s a humanitarian effort. There is an abundance of free A1C testing that gives donors vital health insights and encourages proactive steps toward better health, especially in communities of color that are greatly affected by diabetes.” says Alderman Coleman.

Many people are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and may be unaware of their condition. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle habits and limited access to healthcare contribute to this increased chance.

Alderman Coleman is co-sponsoring a Diabetes Awareness Month Education and Resource forum at Kennedy King College in hopes of educating the public of the various dangers, warning signs, and prognosis in dealing with diabetes. The lead host is Howard Brown Health who specializes in primary medical care, Behavioral health, and Research.

The forum will also include a Vaccination station; general health screenings and various panel discussions and demonstration include but not limited to:

· Health and Equity

· Living Well with Diabetes

· Movement and Education

· Cooking Demonstrations well

Alderman Coleman is proud to announce that this year’s forum will include a Thanksgiving Luncheon. The Luncheon offers a wide variety of traditional Thanksgiving dishes along with healthy items that promote good health and wellness.

Alderman Coleman concludes, “ Diabetes disproportionately affects the Black community, with higher rates and severe complications compared to white Americans, driven by a combination of biological, social, and environmental factors. This is why it is so imperative that communities of color must always have these forums and panel discussions that promote wellness.

Facts Concerning Diabetes:

Higher Rates---African Americans are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than their white counterparts. In 2023, 13.4 % of Black men and 12.7 % of Black women were diagnosed with diabetes, which is significantly higher than the rates among white adults.

Complications—African Americans are also more likely to experience severe complications from diabetes, including a 46% higher rate of diabetic retinopathy and 2.6 times the prevalence of end stage renal disease due to diabetes, compared to white Americans.
