Former Journalist’s Fragrance Company Promotes Self Care

By Tia Carol Jones

Brianna Arps believes a person’s sense of smell is their strongest sense and that it connects directly to neuro passageways in the brain and parts of the brain that process memories, emotions and feelings. With that in mind, Arps created Moodeaux in 2021, a fragrance company that uses advance scent science to create products that are meant to accessorize a person’s mood.

Arps, a former multimedia journalist, always thought she would be a beauty, fashion and lifestyle editor for the entirety of her career. From a spiritual sense, she said practicing obedience is what led her to launch a fragrance company. From an operational business perspective, she realized from her years as a journalist, there was an opportunity and space to launch a fragrance company. Arps leveraged her background in media, love for marketing and branding and love of fragrance and perfumery to create and fill the void in the industry that she felt was too large to ignore.

Arps said that mainstream, legacy fragrance brands, which come from the fashion houses tend to treat the indie fragrance category as an auxiliary entry point into luxury fragrance and an afterthought, as a means of selling aspiration instead of selling perfumery as an art and as a science.

“People are very value driven, people are really brand oriented they favor brands they believe cater to their intrinsic values, they’re founded by people or led by people they relate to.” Arps said.

Arps said that Moodeaux helps people tap into their emotions, their feelings and the Universal desire to feel seen and heard and accepted in a way that really honors people’s individuality and challenges mainstream norms.

Moodeaux doesn’t rely on celebrity or aspiration to market the products. Instead, it is creating a world where its audience feels empowered to boldly express or reinvent themselves through the art form of perfumery. Arps’ personal philosophy and the philosophy that leads everything they do at Moodeaux is that they believe fragrance is more than just a finishing touch, they believe fragrance is a powerful tool for taking on the world, smelling and feeling one’s best.

“Our fragrances are really those moody confidants that empower people to boldly express themselves with every spritz,” she said.

There are three Moodeaux fragrances available, with a four set to launch soon. The first fragrance, Worthy, was launched in 2021. It is meant to encapsulate the feelings of worthiness and features red rose, lavender and orange blossom, along with other scents meant to feel like a cozy blanket. While Worthy is on the soft and layer able side, Moodeaux’s second fragrance Punk Star is loud and edgy, which is meant to encapsulate feelings of bold disruption and unapologetic fearlessness. Brand New is meant to make every day feel like a bright, fresh start. Worthy is what Moodeaux is known for and Arps said it has become what the company is known for.

Arps said that in creating fragrances, Moodeaux prioritizes universal human experiences and finding ways to distill those experiences into something that smell pleasant or reminiscent of what that mood or feeling is. She said that while Moodeaux isn’t exactly trend focused, it does consider consumer research to develop products it feels are unique to the brand. She said as Moodeaux continues to grow, all three scents have won awards, and it is something she is proud of. She said those awards signal that the scents have affinity in the market, and they are doing something right.
