Doctors Provide Information About Resources For Women Experiencing Menopause

By Tia Carol Jones

Dr. Cordia Clark-White and Dr. Toni Scott-Terry have set out to redefine the conversation around menopause. As gynecologists, women’s health is at the forefront of what they do as physicians.

Scott-Terry, Founder of Allure Wellness, said that while women’s health has been a topic of conversation, issues that women deal with like menopause and perimenopause haven’t always been discussed. As a result, when women experience these changes, they aren’t told what their options are.

Scott-Terry and Clark-White have been doing events and informational sessions about menopause, perimenopause and post menopause to let women know their options and what choices are available to them. Scott-Terry said that there are so many different ways that people can treat their symptoms and still feel like themselves.

“It’s an important part of our life, it’s the second part and it should be the best part of our entire life, so we want to enhance that and give people the knowledge in order to do that,” she said.

Clark-White, Founder of Women’s Progressive Health & Wellness, said that now, more than ever, women are asking for answers to their questions involving how to manage their symptoms while in menopause, as well as why they are going through menopause. What Clark-White wants women to know is that menopause is going to happen, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world, and they are not alone in what they are going through. Clark-White and Scott-Terry wanted to provide a safe space for women to ask questions and get information. They recently hosted an event at the Greenwood Oasis, where women received information about nutrition, mental health and fitness, along with other valuable resources and answers to their questions.

“There are so many options out there and we just want to make sure they know all of their options,” Clark-White said.

Clark-White and Scott-Terry said the question they are asked all the time is “what do I do?,” when women come in with complaints. Because everyone’s experience is different, it is important for them to treat each patient individually and what works with their life. While some women might come in complaining about hot flashes, some women will not have hot flashes. While some women will have brain fog, that won’t be the experience of other women. Scott-Terry said their goal with treating their patients is to ensure that the next chapter of their life is the best it can be.

Clark-White said she wants women going through menopause to know that it can be the beginning of a powerful new chapter. Scott-Terry said while medical training doesn’t always include alternative therapies, bioidentical hormones have been around since the 1930s, but the majority of doctors have not been trained on them. She said women should look for a physician who can listen to their symptoms and help them process their journey or even be willing to refer them to doctors who might use alternative therapies. Clark-White said patients shouldn’t be afraid to advocate for themselves and ask questions, and if they are not getting the answers they need, find a physician who can give them the answers they need.
