Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter Strengthens Commitment to Health Equity Through Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

In an ambitious effort to tackle longstanding health disparities, the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter has reaffirmed its commitment to health equity by expanding mission-driven activities that reflect the needs of underserved and underrepresented communities.

Recognizing that certain populations are disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, the Association is calling for an urgent shift: all communities must have fair and just access to early diagnosis, risk reduction strategies, and high-quality care. Yet, research has shown that Black, Hispanic/Latino, rural, and LGBTQ+ communities are significantly less likely to receive timely diagnoses, participate in research trials, or gain access to adequate support services.

“This is unacceptable and must change,” said leaders from the Illinois Chapter in a unified statement. “At the Alzheimer’s Association, we believe that engaging diverse perspectives is critical to achieving health equity. Without it, millions remain at risk.”

To address these challenges, the Illinois Chapter is expanding its partnerships with trusted local and national organizations, focusing on culturally competent outreach, education, and services. These strategic partnerships aim to bridge the gaps that continue to widen across healthcare systems, particularly in marginalized communities.

In alignment with the Association’s broader commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), the Illinois Chapter is building an internal culture that prioritizes understanding and inclusive policy-making. Staff members are engaging in ongoing education and actively implementing DEI-informed practices in their community outreach and program development.

Efforts include delivering Alzheimer’s education in multiple languages, developing support groups tailored for diverse cultural experiences, and holding events in accessible, welcoming spaces. Programs will also be expanded to rural regions and urban areas where services have historically been limited.

“We are not only sharing our time, talent and resources,” the chapter stated, “but also listening — truly listening — to the lived experiences of those we serve.”

The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter affirmed its open and supportive stance toward all individuals, regardless of age, race, gender identity, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, ability, or religion.

As the fight against Alzheimer’s continues, the Association’s push for equity aims to ensure no community is left behind — because the path to a world without Alzheimer’s must be one that includes everyone.
