TCA Health Holds Successful Informational and Hiring Event

Job seekers were ready as soon as TCA Health opened the adjacent rooms to its clinic for information and employment opportunities. Construction of a new Nutrition and Wellness Center in the Altgeld Gardens/Riverdale area, prompted the three-hour hiring event to make sure area residents benefit from the project. The nearly 10,000 square foot Nutrition and Wellness Center will be connected to TCA's main health facility at 1029 East 130th Street.

A total of 11 companies were on hand to tell those in attendance about available jobs, training and answer questions about education requirements and experience.

"The goal is to get people employed in the community," said Tim Grant, TCA Health Employment and Training Program project manager. "There are apprentice programs at Olive Harvey College and Moraine Valley College and they will help pay for apprenticeships."

In addition to staffing for its clinics, TCA Health is looking for workers for the Nutrition Center.

"We're going to have the grab and go cafe. We're going to have the teaching kitchen and the Client Choice Pantry. So, it's an entire business on its own," explained Vernonica Clarke, TCA Health CEO. "We'll need people to staff every area."

The official groundbreaking took place in Nov. and construction is expected to end this summer. Clarke said the hiring event shows the community's need for work and lack of resources.

"We almost didn't have enough space. The new center will allow for more space to hold community activities and events," shared Clarke.

Partnering with TCA Health was Milhouse Construction, Metropolitan Family Services, City Colleges of Chicago, and other major employers.

"Many people were interested in finding a program that could train and teach them," said Freeman Banks, Milhouse Construction project manager. "We were pleased with the turnout."

Once the center is complete, it will help to address the longstanding food desert that was created when the area lost its only full-service grocery store in 2018. The facility also will have a yoga and meditation space and community meeting areas.

TCA Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center founded in 1970 to provide quality health care services to Chicago's medically underserved and underrepresented communities. TCA provides comprehensive primary health care and support services to over 10,000 patients annually.

The health center is planning to hold another hiring event in the spring.
