Nearly 160 Cubs Charities Youth and Volunteers Pack Thousands of Meals to Address Food Insecurity Across Chicago
CHICAGO — On January 20, Cubs Charities proudly marked its fifth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), bringing together nearly 160 volunteers, including Cubs Nike RBI players, their families, coaches, Cubs Charities staff, and Cubs player Pete Crow-Armstrong. Together, they packed 17,523 meals to support families in need across Chicago and address food insecurity. In addition to volunteer efforts, Cubs Charities donated $25,000 to the GCFD, supporting their work to address food insecurity and provide meals to families across Chicago. This impactful event honored Dr. King’s enduring legacy of community and equality by inspiring individuals to take meaningful action within their communities.
Volunteering at the GCFD on MLK Jr. Day has become a cherished tradition for Cubs Nike RBI players and their families. Since 2020, Cubs Nike RBI players and family members have packed nearly 192,000 meals and contributed more than 2,500 volunteer hours at the food depository warehouse. This year, youth players, family members, and coaches joined Cubs Charities staff to help ensure more families have access to nutritious meals.
Beyond the event itself, Cubs Charities has also extended its commitment to this partnership through financial contributions, donating $225,000 to GCFD since the pandemic. This funding has enhanced the food depository’s ability to provide essential services, helping residents across the city access vital resources.
