The services are Saturday, January 25, 2025, St. at Ailbe Church, 9015 S. Harper, Chicago, IL.  Services begin at 10am, Mass begins at 11am.

Antoinette Adell Mahoney, along with her twin brother Anthony Odell Mahoney, were born to Neily and Naomi Mahoney December 16,1940.  From birth, the twins were very close and started to protect each other coming out the womb.  On July 24, 1942, their younger sister Iris Meredith Mahoney was born and it was like they were triplets!  At an early age, the Mahoney children began participating in activities provided by the local park district and other community locations. Antoinette acquired a competitive spirit and developed a love for track, tennis, board games, reading and trivia.  Her love for information made her a successful student at Park Manor Grammar School and Hirsh High School. After high school, Antoinette attended the University of Illinois (Urbana) and CTC, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and two Master degrees.

On June 20, 1960, Antoinette became the proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Alpha Alpha Chapter, where she dedicated her life to the betterment of developing women to follow the path to finer womanhood, including the betterment of community, self and education.  She went on to be one of the founding members of Zeta Phi Beta’s Graduate Chapter Zeta Tau Zeta, where she remained an active member until her death.

Antoinette Mahoney became Antoinette Kirkwood in 1963 when she married the charming, business-minded Nathan Kirkwood, Jr.  They became very active members at St. Ailbe Church.  From this marriage, they had two awesome sons, Nathan III (November 9,1966) and Johnathan Warren (August 26, 1969).  Antoinette and Nathan immersed themselves in developing their boys with excellent educational opportunities, by attending St. Ailbe grammar school and Kenwood high school, where they both were on the bowling team (a love they inherited from their parents who had started bowling in local leagues). Following their parents in higher education, Jonathan attended the University of Illinois (Urbana) like his mom and Nathan III attended Roosevelt University like his dad, both graduating from each perspective school.  Antoinette loved being involved with sports and civic activities with her family, while continuing to matriculate to a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in Business Education.  She worked for the Chicago Board of Education as a teacher where she taught business related classes at Harlan High School, C.V.S. High School, Julian High School, Calumet High School and Whitney Young Magnet High School.  She retired in 2000, after 37 years, from the Board of Education Central Office Headquarters, as an Administrator in the Tuition Out Department.  Being the very loving wife that she was, after retiring , Antoinette became active in assisting her husband Nathan, with his very successful income tax business.

Antoinette was extremely active in the lives of her family members and loved the fact that she lived within 20 blocks of her mother, twin brother, her sister and their families for decades.

On January 3, 2025, Antoinette passed away peacefully. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband Nathan Jr., sons Nathan III, and Johnathan, nieces and nephews Iris (Eddie), Lisa(Pam), Tammy, Tyra, Anthony Jr., great nieces Courtney, Tyralyn, Elana, great nephews Terrel, Anthony III, Steven and brother-in-law Buford(Shirley)  She was preceded in death by her father Neily, mother Naomi, brother Anthony Sr., sister Iris M and niece Theolyn.

As we bid farewell to Antoinette, we do so with gratitude for the laughter and memories she brought into our lives. Chicago will never be the same without her. Her unique brand of teaching delivered with accuracy, humor and love, will be sorely missed. Here's to you, Antoinette, thank you for the love, laughter, the moments, and the enduring spirit of joy you shared with us all.
