Black Girl Vitamins Provides Much Needed Vitamins And Supplements For Black Women

By Tia Carol Jones

Black Girl Vitamins was founded three years ago in 2021 when the co- founder Maxine Manager found out she was Vitamin D deficient. It inspired her to do something about it since Vitamin D deficiency affects Black women at higher rates.

The goal of the Chicago-based, Black owned and operated wellness brand is to provide Black women with nutrients and vitamins, as well as awareness and education on common nutritional and vitamin deficiencies that affect Black women. Another deficiency that affects Black women is Iron deficiency.

“The brand, since 2021, has grown. We’re now a one-stop-shop for all of Black women’s vitamin needs,” said Jennifer Juma, Head of Strategy for Black Girl Vitamins.

There are 20 different products that Black Girl Vitamins sells on its website and on Amazon. Those products include Vitamin D, Once A Day Gummies, Organic Sea Moss Pills, Hair, Skin & Nails, Vitamin B12, Collagen, Iron Gummies, Probiotics, BGV Collagen Powder, Choless-Control, Sea Moss Gummies, Meno Chill, Omega 3, In the Mood, Prenatal, Inositol, PCOS Relief, Magnesium, COQ10 and Vitamin D Sugar Free. Black Girl Vitamins is looking to include more products, based on issues that affect Black women disproportionately and what customers are looking for.

Juma said the customers who use the products have been giving a lot of positive feedback. Women who have used the Vitamin D Gummies like the taste, how effective it is and how it has helped them with their energy levels. Juma said it is encouraging to receive so much positive feedback.

Juma said because Black Girl Vitamins is speaking to issues that affect the Black community more, it is a way of prioritizing the needs of Black women within the health and wellness industry. She said there are not a lot of vitamin brands that prioritize and center that issues of Black women.

“We are doing that by having this bold name, Black Girl Vitamins and we’re really centering our community,” Juma said.

Black Girl Vitamins hosts in-person events to engage customers, as well as webinars with medical advisors. There are three Black women medical practitioners who help the company with content. Recently, there was a webinar that focused on blood sugar. Juma said there are at least 200-250 people who participate in those webinars who want to talk about their health issues. She said that some feedback the company has received about the webinars is that the women who participate have never had the opportunity to connect with a Black woman doctor before.

“We provide that culturally competent care when it comes to health and that’s really important and just seeing how people are responding to it as something they need, we want to keep doing it,” Juma said.

Black Girl Vitamins recently became the official supplement sponsor of Chicago State University Athletics. With the sponsorship, the team’s players and coaches will receive vitamins and the team also will receive direct monetary sponsorship. In August 2024, Black Girl Vitamins became the official vitamin sponsor of the Howard University Women’s Basketball Team.

In her role as Head of Strategy, Juma works with different organizations that Black Girl Vitamins can partner with and donate products to. Because it is a Chicago-based business, Juma said it made sense to connect and partner with Chicago State University. Juma said she was really inspired by the way the Chicago State University Women’s Basketball Coach wanted to support the players through vitamins.

Black Girl Vitamins also has a scholarship program where it awards students in the healthcare field a scholarship quarterly. Black Girl Vitamins is using social media and the community they’ve cultivated to get the word out about the company. Also, they are seeing customers recommend the products to their friends and family.
