Haitian American Museum of Chicago to host its 13th Annual Gala on December 6 at Ukrainian National Museum
Museum Founder Elsie Hector Hernandez encourages the local public to attend the gala to acknowledge the preservation of history in a time where she says “Haiti’s history is held hostage by violence and political unrest.”
CHICAGO - On Saturday, Dec. 6, The Haitian American Museum of Chicago will host its 13th Annual Gala at the Ukrainian National Museum, located at 2249 W. Superior St., from 7 to 10 p.m. The museum’s purpose of the gala is to showcase the importance of preserving history, specifically the history of Haiti and its people.
Haiti’s history is often obscured due to the impact of debt, international relations and negative stigma or perception of its people. This has minimized its revolutionary achievements and had a negative impact on Haiti’s economy. Hernandez seeks support from the public to build a new narrative for Haiti and its people.
“The people of Haiti need the public to join them in recognizing and preserving their history. That is why this gala is so important,,” said Hernandez.
The gala’s keynote speaker is Joel Maxime Jr., an artist featured in the Haitian American Museum of Chicago. This year’s gala’s theme is an acknowledgment to a renaissance period for Haiti. Hernandez titled the gala Traje (Journey) to a Renaissance Period for Haiti.
Museum Founder/CEO Elsie Hector Hernandez, a proud Haitian based in Chicago, says the purpose of the museum is to promote and preserve Haitian art, culture, history and community in Chicago and beyond.
“A renaissance is a rebirth,” said Hernandez. “What Haiti is experiencing is chaos and insecurity right now. It is the hope of the museum that the turmoil and insecurity that the country is going through now will end soon and a journey to a renaissance period will begin- optimism.”
