(Calumet City, Illinois) Thaddeus M. Jones - Mayor of Calumet City - successfully introduced a balanced $76 million fiscal budget to the Calumet City City Council for passage. The presentation illustrated $26 million in grants as well as the closing of a 3.9-million-dollar deficit due to anticipated cuts and rollbacks from the federal government.

The mayor’s budget was passed 6 to 1 by the 7-member City Council on Thursday July 31st during a special meeting on the budget.

“I was honored to present this fiscal budget that includes groundbreaking accomplishments from the prior year. For the first time in our city, we were blessed to witness over $26 million in grants. Our business community increased with the addition of over two hundred new companies over the past two years. But moreover, there are no tax increases in this budget.” says Mayor Jones.

Mayor Jones is also expressing his gratitude to City Treasurer Gerald Tarka, City Administrator Cleo Jones, and Mr. John Kasperek in preparing the balanced budget. The mayor is also expressing his gratitude to Alderman Ramonde Williams, Alderman DeAndre Tillman, Alderman DeJuan Gardner, Alderwoman Shalisa Harvey, Alderman Miacole Nelson, and Melissa Phillips for working closely with his administration to get the budget approved and passed.

Mayor Jones adds, “I am excited that our proposed budget addresses a variety of issues and potential challenges impacting our residents. This budget will allow us to not only fulfill the obligation we have to our residents and youth, but we now can aggressively capture this once in a lifetime opportunity to transform our city for the better.”

Some of the budget highlights include, but are not limited to:

  • Successfully Passed a $76 million-dollar balanced budget without raising taxes.
  • Hiring of 36 new police officers
  • Hiring 26 new firefighters
  • Received $26 million dollars in grants for 2025-2026.
  • Hiring of 167 youth through our youth employment program
  • Received $600k grant from Cook County for an effective and quality alley program.
  • Approved a $50 million Wentworth woods development agreement.
  • Approved a $35 million dollar bond for economic development.
  • Eliminated a $3.8 million dollar deficit due to anticipated cuts from the federal government.

Mayor Jones adds, “I am grateful to the Aldermen for passing this budget. It addresses a variety of issues and potential challenges impacting our residents which includes the massive and insensitive cuts from the Trump administration via the alleged, “Big Beautiful Bill...” This budget will allow us to not only fulfill the obligation to our residents and youth, but we now can continue to transform our city for the better.”
