Family Focus Sets New Illinois Standard in Postnatal Equity and Education for Families Across Chicagoland
Village of Care: Doula and Maternal Wellness Event to Promote Free 12 Months After Birth Care and Father-Inclusive Birth Support
CHICAGO, Ill. — On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, Family Focus will host the Village of Care: Doula and Maternal Wellness Event during Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Homan Square Community Center (3517 W. Arthington St., Chicago, IL). The event amplifies the voices of mothers, birth workers, fathers, and legislative leaders, fostering collaboration and dialogue among key stakeholders. It supports their efforts to broaden access to doulas and address disparities in maternal health outcomes throughout Chicago and Northeast Illinois.
The anticipated event also marks the expansion of Family Focus’ Birth Equity Initiative, made possible through funding support from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL), and the McCormick Foundation. These investments position Family Focus as a key contributor to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s statewide maternal health strategy, which includes Medicaid expansion to increase doula access and reduce disparities in maternal outcomes.
With this new support, Family Focus is expanding its network of culturally responsive doulas, offering 100% free postnatal care and education for families across Chicago and Northeast Illinois. The organization’s unique doula training model equips caregivers with essential skills to deliver whole-family support for up to 12 months after birth—far beyond the typical 6-week window. This approach ensures that every mother has access to the care she needs to heal, bond, and thrive. Additionally, the program emphasizes father-inclusive birth support as a key pillar of equitable maternal care.
“Systemic disparities in maternal health require intentional, community-driven solutions. We’re proud to expand access to care that truly meets families where they are,” said Dara Munson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Family Focus. “When families are supported, futures are transformed.”
Commissioner Donna Miller of the Cook County Board will deliver the keynote address, offering insight into Illinois’ maternal health landscape, legislative developments, and how public-private partnerships can drive meaningful health outcomes.
“When we invest in maternal mental health and birth equity, we save lives and shape stronger communities,” said Commissioner Miller. “I’m honored to join Family Focus in this critical conversation.”
