17th Ward Alderman David Moore Demands Apology from Deputy Mayor Garien Gatewood Regarding His "Political" Characterization about Teen's Death
Deputy Mayor Garien Gatewood should apologize for alleging that I am speaking out about the loss of the city's ShotSpotter detection system and the death of 19-year-old Sierra Evans for political gain. Unless Deputy Mayor Gatewood can specifically explain how a neighbor, her family, Father Michael Pfleger and I questioning whether ShotSpotter could have saved her life is a political gain, he needs to retract his statement and issue an apology. Releasing a statement to the media saying, "This is not about politics. This is about how we support families and communities, and perpetuating their pain for political gain is extremely insensitive and immoral,” is an attempt to assassinate my character and I take offense to it.
Specifically, Gatewood needs to issue an apology to Evans' family, for his assertion that they are speaking out for political gain.
Fighting for something my constituents want, isn't political gain. It's serving.
The family who lost a loved one, and is calling for a gunshot detection system is not doing it for political gain. In fact, I doubt they are even involved in politics beyond voting and he is going to accuse them of political gain during their time of pain, because of this administration's failure.
I am asking for an apology or an explanation of his statement about how specifically the family, Fr. Pfleger and I are gaining politically when this is a fight for my residents and Chicagoans at large.
Everyone has the right to be safe and all tools should be on the table. What's political is removing one of those important tools because of a campaign promise.
