Rep. Rita Joins Local Leaders as Park District Takes Over Tinley Park Mental Health Center Site for Recreation Destination
TINLEY PARK, ILL. – Shovels and heavy machinery are busy at work. Progress is underway, and an exciting recreation destination is now on the way in Tinley Park.
State Rep. Bob Rita, D-Blue Island, on Monday, Feb. 26, joined with fellow legislators, local officials and environmental experts to mark the official transfer of ownership of the former Tinley Park Mental Health Center site. Rita helped lead legislation through the Illinois General Assembly that sold the former state property to the Park District of Tinley Park for $1.
Rita also helped ensure $15 million was included in the state budget to clean up the property and prepare it for the Park District to take over.
The Park District officially closed on the property late last week, and now is using the state funds to complete detailed environmental cleanup of the site before redeveloping it as an innovative recreation site that will draw people from across the region.
Rita said he was proud of the cooperative spirit all involved in the land exchange showed over the past year to get to this point.
“For too many years, this site was an eyesore and frustration for the residents of Tinley Park. But with the leadership and teamwork of all of us working together, now it will become a crown jewel for recreation in the area,” Rita said. “I appreciate the hard work that has been done to date and am proud to have helped ensure the Park District is in charge of the site’s future. Brighter and better days are ahead for this land, this community and the region.”
