Prominent Doctors Join Dr. Michael McGee for Gun Violence & Solutions for Prevention Panel at Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel

NEW YORK, NY – July 30, 2024 – Dr. Michael A. McGee, founder of Project Outreach and Prevention (POP) on Youth Violence, and chair of the newly formed, National Medical Association (NMA) Council on Violence Prevention, will moderate “The Social Impact of Gun Violence & Solutions for Prevention” panel discussion during the 2024 Annual NMA Convention & Scientific Assemble on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, New York Ballroom West, 811 7th Avenue (at West 53rd St.) New York, NY 10019.


Dr. McGee will be joined by four of the nation’s foremost doctors, three of whom are published authors; Dr. Robert Gore, Dr. Cedric Dark and Dr. Brian H. Williams, with the two-part event starting from 3:30pm to 4:15pm and 4:15pm to 5:00pm. The special event, which will include “Stop the Bleed” procedural workshop facilitated by Dr. Abdullah Pratt, Assistant Professor/Emergency Medicine Physician at the University of Chicago Medicine, is presented by the National Medical Association Council on Violence Prevention, in conjunction with POP on Youth Violence, and sponsored by Vituity and Howard University’s Center for Excellence.


POP continues the clarion call for youth and gun violence prevention, and their relentless work in providing solutions to a national health crisis highlighted by the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy’s message in June of this year when he said, “Firearm violence is an urgent public health crisis that has led to loss of life, unimaginable pain, and profound grief for far too many Americans.”


Dr. Brian H. Williams is a US Air Force veteran, trauma surgeon, and former congressional health policy advisor based in Dallas, TX. A frontline clinician, Dr. Williams is also a bestselling author of “The Bodies Keep Coming” (Broadleaf Books), and a sought-after public speaker who has dedicated his life to preventing violence and suffering. In 2022 while serving as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, he worked with congressional leaders to help craft and pass the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a significant gun legislation act.


Dr. Cedric Dark, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Henry J.N. Taub Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and is on the Board of Director for Doctors for America, the Board of Trustees for Semester at Sea, and Medical Editor for ACEP Now. Dark is a trusted voice on health care and health policy. his first book “Under the Gun: An ER Doctor’s Cure for America’s Gun Epidemic” (Johns Hopkins University Press).


Named a CNN Hero in 2018, Dr. Robert Gore is an emergency physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Gore is also founder of Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI), a hospital, school, and community-based youth violence intervention and prevention program that supports young people affected by trauma and at risk of intentional violence and recurrent injury. And he is the author of the books “Treating Violence: An Emergency Room Doctor Takes on a Deadly Epidemic” and “Treating Violence” (Beacon Press).


Dr. Abdullah H. Pratt is the Assistant Professor and Emergency Medicine Physician at the University of Chicago Medicine, and the Faculty Director for Community Engagement at the Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Pratt is also the founder of the 501c3 nonprofit Medical Careers Exposure and Emergency Preparedness (MedCEEP) which has trained more than 7,000 students and adults through its programming. Recognized as one of Modern Healthcare’s top 25 Emerging Leaders, Dr. Pratt’s accolades include the 2023 UChicago MBSAA Distinguished Alumni Award for Early Achievement and was named an Associate Junior Faculty Scholar for the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence.


Dr. McGee, MD, MPH, FACEP is a renowned ER Physician, the national chair of the National Medical Association’s (NMA) Council on Violence Prevention, Chairperson of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Diversity & Inclusion, Firearm Violence & Injury Prevention Committee, and the founder of Project Outreach and Prevention (POP) on Youth Violence [www.poponviolence.org].
