ALDERMAN STEPHANIE COLEMAN TO ANNOUNCE TASK FORCE AND CALL TO ACTION FOR ALARMING RATE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST BLACK WOMEN

VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO CITY COUNCIL EXPECTED TO SUPPORT COLEMAN IN CALL FOR PUBLIC HEARINGS TO ADDRESS THIS CHICAGO EPIDEMIC

(Chicago, IL) Chicago 16th Ward Alderman Stephanie Coleman- Chairman of the Chicago City Council Black Caucus- will be joined by The Chicago based African American Women Pastors Organization and Chicago Urban League President Karen Freeman as they collectively announce their full support of Alderman Coleman’s Plan to Action for the development of a Chicago City Council Task Force concerning the abnormal rate of violence against black women in Chicago.

Over the past year, Alderman Coleman has monitored the high rate of violent occurrences and homicides involving Black women. According to a report entitled, “Chicago Injustice Unveiled,” Data from 2022 highlights over 26,000 violent crimes and more than 212,000 non-violent crimes in the city. These incidents impacted approximately 260,000 victims, of which 67,000, or 25%, were Black women. Despite accounting for just 16% of Chicago’s population, Black women suffer disproportionately from crime.

“As women of color, in both the public and private sector, we cannot stand idle and witness these increases of violence against our fellow sisters. Chicago has produced some of the most powerful women of color in this nation. However, all our collective accomplishments are reduced to mere baseless victories amid the countless sisters who are missing, injured by violent means, and even murdered. “says Alderman Coleman.
The above-mentioned reports further states, “Patterns of violent crimes against Black women persisted across the board. They accounted for 35% of assaults, 38% of batteries, 34% of 146 kidnappings, and half of the 19 human trafficking victims. The trend extended to non-violent crimes, where Black women constituted nearly a quarter of property thefts and 28% of motor vehicle thefts.”

Alderman Coleman adds, “This is a state of emergency that warrants the immediate attention of the Chicago City Council. I have begun the process for the development of an all-inclusive task force that will include public hearings on this topic. The world needs to hear the horror stories from women who feel as though that they have been left out and not regarded as humans. I am hopeful that there will be a unanimous show of support from the mayor, the entire city council, and our emergency services. Collectively we can address and engage ourselves to ensure to Black women that their lives matter.”

Alderman Coleman will outline her full plan of action during the press conference. President Freeman and numerous African American female clergy leaders will announce their support and participation in the outreach of the plan as well as the implementation.

Coleman concludes,“We cannot stand idle and allow these deplorable statistics to continue to increase every year. Only the perpetrators of these crimes win when we remain silent!"

Press Conference Scheduled For Tuesday, January 30th, 2024@ Noon
