Dr. Tawana Robinson is running for Illinois State Representative for the 27th District in the March 19th election. She said she wants to run for the office because wants to advocate on the behalf of African American children who attend Chicago Public Schools.

Robinson graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1993, then graduated from Augustana College in 1997. She returned to Chicago and decided to start teaching in Chicago Public Schools.

The first school she worked at was John Marshall Metropolitan High School. While there, she worked on her Masters’ Degree in Special Education. She transferred to George Washington Carver High School for a couple of years and went back to Marshall because she loved it so much.

“The principal and his administrative team, he was an outstanding principal and his assistant principals were outstanding as well. They provided their teachers with the resources that they needed to teach in that community,” Robinson said.

Robinson said she always enjoys teaching and engaging Black youth. At Marshall, she was able to use her creativity and bring her gifts into the classroom. Also as a  performer, she has opened for comedians and performed poetry. Robinson has worked in different administrative roles in different school districts in the South Suburbs and West Suburban districts.

Robinson believes that there is a need to have someone representing the 27th District that has high morals, integrity and can go into the legislature and introduce legislation that can make positive impacts in the community. She has sat at the table with decision makers as part of the Proviso Township Democratic Organization.

Robinson is the Founder and CEO of It Takes a Village Trade and Technical Academy, which was founded in 2018. The non-profit organization’s mission is to give young Black men access to skilled trades and technical jobs. It is her goal to partner with entities like Ford Motor Company and Chicago Transit Authority to get the students placed in positions after they complete the program at the non-profit. She is still in the process of finding a brick-and-mortar space for the organization.

“My hope is that when I become the State Representative, more doors will open,” she said.

Robinson wants to be able to bring resources to the community that will enable grassroots organizations to have enough funding to do work on a much larger scale. She believes doing so will help reduce crime, create job readiness programs and provide much needed social services for the community.

When it comes to the most pressing issues in the 27th District, Robinson mentioned crime. She talked about the shooting near CICS Longwood High School in January. She said the safety of students is paramount to the safety of the community. She believes there should be common sense laws when it comes to crime and safety. Other pressing issues Robinson talked about are the lack of funding for schools in the community, as well as the lack of funding for medical facilities and social services.

“I would advocate for us to have high-quality wraparound services in our community, not just in one area of our community, but throughout our community,” she said.
