After School Matters Applications Open for Chicago Teens to Participate in Free Spring Programming
Teens can apply to hundreds of program opportunities and learn skills in culinary arts, dance, gardening, health and fitness, photography, civic engagement, and more
CHICAGO—Applications are now open for hundreds of after-school programs offered this spring through After School Matters®. Program opportunities are available for Chicago teens in the arts, communications, and leadership, sports, and STEM. Spring programs will run from February 26 – May 11. Interested teens can apply at afterschoolmatters.org.
There is no cost to participate, and teens earn a stipend in their programs. Young people will learn from expert instructor mentors, developing skills they can apply to college and their future careers.
“After School Matters provides teens outlets to explore topics they’re interested in, allowing young people to express themselves in creative ways while teaching them skills they can apply in college and their careers,” said Tony Diaz, Chief Programs Officer at After School Matters. “When we invest in our teens, they go on to give back to their communities and Chicago, creating a better city and future for everyone.”
A few of the exciting programs offered this spring include:
Camera Flux
Teens learn to explore their homes, communities, and fashion through photography and video. Participants are taught photography skills using both digital and analog cameras, studio equipment, and photo/video editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere.
Dance For L.I.F.E. 2
Teens learn to dance while working on critical life skills that prepare them for college and their careers. Participants produce and direct a state-of-the-art final presentation that includes dance, visuals, and discussion.
Gardeneers
Teens learn about nutrition, the community, and the environment through hands-on lessons in school gardens. Participants plant, harvest, and eat the produce they’ve grown.
Increase The Peace
Teens learn the basics of community organizing. Participants conduct three digital or independent campaigns either on community safety, mutual aid, or hosting virtual information sessions on community issues.
Tumbling Into Fitness
Teens learn tumbling skills that include conditioning, flexibility exercises, and strength training. Participants also study nutrition and learn to create healthy meal plans for themselves and their families.
You Got Served Culinary Program
Teens gain skills in gourmet food prep, presentation, and service. Participants also learn to build relationships, support their communities, and display leadership in their academic, professional, and family lives.
Teens can search and apply for spring 2024 programs at afterschoolmatters.org. All After School Matters programs are free and open to Chicago high school students who are at least 14 years old. As part of the application process, teens interview with program instructors to discuss their interests. Teens are encouraged to apply early, as program opportunities fill up quickly.
