Calumet City City Hall, 204 Pulaski Road, Calumet City, Illinois
(Calumet City, Illinois) -Thaddeus Jones- Mayor of Calumet City, Illinois- along with Calumet City Police Chief Kevin Kolosh, will pause the start of the regular City Council meeting to honor Calumet City Police Officer Tyler Newkirk.
On July 4th, 2024, Mr. Jim Good and his pregnant wife, Mrs. Good who are residents of Pennsylvania, were celebrating the holiday at a family member's home in the 16400 block of Stateline Road in Calumet City. At approximately 10:00p.m. Calumet City Police responded to this residence with a report that Mr. Good was injured by fireworks.
Officers arrived on scene and quickly assessed the injury was a gunshot
wound. Calumet City EMS personnel provided immediate care to Mr. Good and transported him to the hospital for medical treatment of his injury.
Officer Tyler Newkirk accompanied Mr. Good to the hospital where his wife later arrived. At the hospital, Mrs. Good, a high-risk expectant mother, was overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty about her husband's condition. Officer Newkirk provided support, regularly checked on Mrs. Good and showed empathy.
The compassion and dedication Officer Newkirk displayed left a profound impact on the Good family, who later honored Officer Newkirk by naming their son after him, "Sebastian Tyler Good," born in October of 2024.
The police investigation into this matter determined that the bullet was fired into the air from an unknown location and, on its descent, struck Mr. Good. Family members on scene did not report hearing any gunfire.
Celebratory gunfire is illegal, and it remains a dangerous issue on major holidays like the 4th of July. Calumet City Police remind the public that firing weapons into the air is not only illegal, but it poses a serious risk to the safety of the community.
The Good family will speak publicly of Officer Newkirk’s display of compassion as well as introducing him to his two-month-old namesake, Sebastian “Tyler” Good.
