It led Morrison to figure out how she could create a life that was more care-filled, steady and supportive. She started doing the work and talking about it. She found others were having the same issues.
“I realized there was a bigger conversation, not just about practicing self-care and doing inner work, but also, a conversation about how the things we’ve been sold about self-care were also not serving us, too,” she said.
The ultimate goal with Inner Workout, as a business, is to make wellbeing easier. There’s the business-to-business side where Inner Workout works with organizations and leads workshops on the intersection of mindfulness and leadership and wellbeing. On the direct-to-consumer side, Inner Workout aims to make self-care practical and accessible for people. That is done with workshops and content to help people practice self-care.
Morrison, who studied human and organizational development with a focus on leadership, started her career in a leadership development program. She loves talking about how leaders are really well positioned to support their employees wellbeing or harm their employees wellbeing. She also talked about how the mindsets of caring for yourself and mindfulness enable people to be better leaders.
Inner Workout’s definition of self-care is listening within and responding in the most loving way possible. Morrison said it can be a conversation a person has with themselves, where the person responds with love, using the resources that are available.
“We’re not always taught to listen and honor ourselves. There are so many little ways we can be disconnected from what we actually want and need. I think it’s so profound for you to come back to that in yourself and the ripple affect it has,” she said.
Morrison has always loved writing and reading. Writing a book was always something that was in the back of her head. The publishing company reached out to her after reading one of Inner Workout’s digital workbook. With the book, “Inner Workout,” all of the aspects of what Inner Workout has, from the five dimensions of well-being to the assessment for well-being, are all in one place.
It was the words of her editor: “I picture this being like a gorgeous book that people have on their bedside stand and they can flip to whatever page they want, and know that they’re going to be encouraged.” The book is the lived vision of that.
Morrison has been very intentional about her self-care since 2017. Then, since 2019 or so, she has been leading workshops. She had workshops and keynotes and podcasts that she was able to use, along with research and training, that went into writing the book.
Morrison says the best thing about the book is that it is accessible and practical for people. She loves being in the role of facilitator. “I’m not here to be a guru, or the person who has everything figured out and is telling you what to do. I’m here to be the person to hold space for you to step into who you are,” she said.
The book gives information while also giving people the ability to decide how they want to apply what they’ve learned in their lives.
Morrison believes that being your full self means not holding back who you are or what you want in order to please other people, or to please the majority, as long as people can do it safely. She acknowledges that someone, as a Black woman, it might not be safe to be your full self in every space.
Morrison said people can incorporate mindfulness in their lives by just being present. It can also be coming back to the present. Movement training can be a way for people to be mindful and get back into their bodies. It can remind you that you have a body, it can be practicing yoga or running or walking.
“There’s also a certain appreciation you can have for your body,” she said, adding that body gratitude can also be good.
Morrison hopes people who read the book have their mind expanded around self-care and what it is, that the book is practical and accessible for people and it helps people build trust in themselves and build a deeper relationship with themselves.
“The book is about I can trust myself to honor my needs and to care for myself,” she said.
