IDG+ Architects wins bid for Dolton School District 149
IDG+ Architects has done two middle school addition projects for the Springfield Public Schools District 186, six projects for the Peoria Public School District 150, as well as construction of a new Fire Station in Peoria. The firm also has renovated the Peoria Fire Training Academy and the Peoria 911 Communications Center. The firm has converted media centers for schools in Decatur, Ill.
Aaron Gunn is an Associate Managing Principal at IDG+ Architects office in Peoria. Gunn has been with the firm since 2018. Education is a passion for the architectural firm.
“We have a connection to education. Ben was a professor at Prairie View A&M University. He taught architecture for a number of years, at the college level. He’s always had a passion for education in general. We, as an architecture firm, we seek to find ways to help improve the education, environment or facilities where kids are educated in, at an early age,” Gunn said.
IDG+ Architects wants to make an impact on the community and in the world, through working with educational institutions. The firm has created a niche for itself in the educational facility renovation space.
In addition to the renovation of the three school facilities for Dolton School District 149, IDG+ Architects will also do retainer architecture work on the school building every three years. The plan is to have construction start on the Dolton School District 149 project in Spring 2024, with an anticipated completion by Fall 2024.
This is the first project where IDG+ Architects will be the lead architect in the Chicagoland area. In the past, the firm has been a consultant or sub-prime contractor on projects in the area. IDG+ Architects has done preliminary design work for actor Harry Lennix’s Lillian Marcie Center, which when finished will be located at 43rd and Cottage Grove, in Chicago.
Gunn credited the Southland Black Chamber of Commerce with shining a light on the need for more participation of minority professional service firms. He said the Chamber led the charge in letting school districts know there are qualified and capable minority-owned architecture and engineering firms available to do the work on educational facilities.
“The Chamber has been instrumental in helping us establish ourselves in the South Suburban area,” Gunn said.
