NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION EVENT SLATED IN CHICAGO, OCT. 21
Highlighting National Bullying Prevention Month, youth leaders and community members will converge for Chicago's 2023 Anti-Bullying/Violence Youth Summit. The event will be held on Saturday, October 21st, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Morgan Park Presbyterian Church's Annex, 2017 W. 110th Place.
The summit will engage youth leaders and activists on how best to combat the increasing trend of bullying in schools and society. The summit is hosted by the Bullying Prevention and Awareness 365 (BPA 365), the Chicago Community Trust, and support groups.
BPA's President, Dr. Dorothy J. Thompson, a Chicago Public Schools System retired principal, decries the increasing wave of bullying and violence.
"There is a tremendous need to create more awareness of the growing trend of bullying and to come out with a grass-root approach to address it, especially among youths," Thompson said. "When bullying is not effectively controlled, it leads to violence including suicide among youth."
According to a recent nation-wide report, 46% of teens experience cyberbullying at least once, and 22% of students get bullied during the school year. Students report that verbal harassment is the most common form of bullying at school. Also, name-calling is the most common form of child cyberbullying.
At the Chicago Summit, concerned youth leaders and activists will speak on the issues and solutions. The summit is open to youth group leaders aged 14-17 and 18-24. Parents and community members are also encouraged to attend.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. Ernest Baker, senior pastor of New Hope Christian Missionary Baptist Church.
Presenters will include Dr. Laurie Collier, Mental Health; Dr. Carolyn Strong, Social Media; Marvinetta Woodley-Penn, Communication; and Baptiste Dixon, Self-Care.
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance, continental breakfast, and boxed lunch. Pre-registration is required at www.bullyingprevention365.org.
