RE-ENTRY
(Chicago, Il,) Dennis Deer- Cook County Commissioner of the 2nd District- is expressing his appreciation to his fellow Commissioners for supporting him in his quest to ensure that all Cook County residents have a fair chance at redemption, growth, and prosperity.
Commissioner Deer successfully sponsored a resolution declaring the month of April as “Second Chance Month in Cook County.” The measure was passed overwhelmingly during a recent meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
“I’m honored, grateful, and appreciative of my colleagues supporting this measure which is aimed to break the cycle of criminal recidivism and improving outcomes for people returning from prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities through the Second Chance Act. “says Commissioner Deer.
Commissioner Deer has been a firm advocate of the Second Chance Act. Long before Congress passed the Act into law, Commissioner Deer had partnered with U.S Congressman Danny Davis in rallying support of the measure. In fact, the Commissioner was the Co-Chairperson of the 7th Congressional Criminal Justice Taskforce which initiated the grassroots effort for passage of the Second Chance Act.
Commissioner Deer adds, “My goal in sponsoring this resolution was to ensure that the government of Cook County would not only be committed to the narrative of the Second Chance Act, but to be an industry leader in opening the doors of fairness and redemption.”
This Cook County resolution recognizes President Joe Biden and Congressman Davis for their leadership in not only ensuring the passage of the federal Second Chance Act, but also their successful efforts in securing funding for the bill. The resolution also details the challenges that ex-offenders experience in the re-entry process that was developed to allow them the opportunities to support their families. Additionally, the measure outlines the government of Cook County’s commitment to sponsoring events and townhall meetings in support of April being designated as “Second Chance Month.”
