“Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited”


Premier Event Celebrates All the Faces of Black Giving at Premier Reception

 

An overflowing crowd of over 200 filled the Chicago Cultural Center on Feb. 21 for Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy’s (CAAIP) Premier Reception for the exhibition Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited. While the event was a recognition of the Chicago icons, legends and community honorees featured in the highly lauded exhibit, it was also a homecoming filled with inspiring moments. 

 

Honorees and their surrogates accepting awards at the event were Common, Academy Award-, Emmy- and Grammy-winning artist, actor, author and activist; Derrick Rose, New York Knicks; John H. Johnson, Johnson Publishing Company; Deborah Harrington, former president of the Woods Fund Chicago; Wilbur Milhouse, Milhouse Engineering & Construction; Dion Dawson, Dion’s Chicago Dream, Emerging Philanthropist; Janell Nelson, JNJ Creative, Hidden Philanthropist; Leslie J. Anderson Rutland, BMO Financial Group, Legacy Philanthropist; Essence Smith, ELMS Productions, Young Adult Philanthropist; and Jahkil Jackson, Project I Am, Youth Philanthropist. 

 

The event also included a lavish buffet, special dance performances by Red Clay Dance Company and entertainment by DJ Selah Say in addition to a guided tour of the exhibition.  The exhibition is free to the public and continues through April with a series of activities and talks planned across the city.
