2023 Municipal Election Recap
The Tuesday, Feb. 28th, municipal election in the City of Chicago consisted of several important races. From Mayor of the City of Chicago to Alderman to the new District Councils, people were encouraged to get out and vote.
In the Mayor’s race there were nine candidates. The Incumbent, two Aldermen, one State Representative, a Former head of Chicago Public Schools, one Cook County Commissioner, one Congressman, one Community Activist and one Businessman all vying to lead the city of Chicago. Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson and Former head of CPS Paul Vallas are in a run-off, for the city's top position with the run-off election taking place on Tuesday, April 4th.
At the time of writing this article, Willie Wilson, who received 48,658 votes and Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, who received 70,006 votes, had not conceded the election.
There are also run-offs in several Aldermanic races that voters must pay close attention. In the 4th Ward, State Representative Lamont Robinson received 46% of the vote and Prentice Butler received 14.97% of the vote. In the 5th Ward, Desmon C. Yancy received 26% of the vote and Martina Hone received 17% of the vote. In the 6th Ward, William C. Hall received 24% of the vote and Richard A. Wooten received 22.9% of the vote. In the 21st Ward, Cornell Dantzler received 22% of the vote and Ronnie L. Mosley received 24.7% of the vote.
The City of Chicago introduced District Councils during this election, which consists of three people for each of the 22 Chicago Police Districts. The District Council’s mission is to build a stronger connection between the community and the police at the district level. Those members of the council will collaborate in the implementation and development of community policing initiatives, work to develop and expand restorative justice practices, as well as work with the community for input on police department practices and policies.
