(Hazel Crest, Il,) John Ball, Sean Long and Robert Fox - Co-Directors and leaders of the Omega Psi Phi ‘s Uplift Foundation- will be joined by over 300 Chicago elected officials, community leaders and area residents in attending the foundation’s 18th Annual Golf outing in which multiple scholarships will be awarded.

The foundation will be hosting its 18th Annual Golf outing Scholarship gathering in which hundreds of youths have been awarded scholarships colleges throughout the United States. The scholarships are awarded to mostly African American youth who not only excel in the classroom, but also their advocacy for peace and volunteerism in their respective neighborhood and community.

However, this year’s gathering will be historic in that a surprise scholarship is being awarded to Donald Dowd, a young student from Homewood Flossmoor High School, who is challenged by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a condition that affects about ten percent of children and around five percent of adults in the United States. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed neurodiversity in children that challenges a child to learn, stay organized, control impulses, and maintain positive relationships.

Teachers, community leaders, and peers of Donald Dowd, have lauded his ability to overcome the challenges of living with ADHD because of his undying commitment to his community and his incredible academic performance. Donald has had to work three times as hard as his counterparts given the enormous obstacles and personal challenges he is forced to endure on a daily basis.

“It was truly a no brainer in selecting Donald Dowd as one of our scholarship recipients for this year. He has exemplified best in class behavior and community service. The outpouring of love, support, and passion for his application of scholarship has been nothing short of amazing. He is well deserving of this honor.” says John Ball-Co-Director of the Uplift Foundation.

Scholarship Committee Chairman Robert Fox adds, “Our foundation’s commitment to education is not only based upon the merits of academic performance, but the character of the recipient as well. Donald’s character along with his common love for people is astonishing. However, we are expecting great accomplishments from Donald, and we want him to continue his personal mission of helping others in need.”

The Foundation will award a mass group of students during its 18th Annual Scholarship fundraising gala. All student recipients selected based upon their respective written essays and their completed applications.

Sean Long, Chairman of the Uplift Foundation, will be joined by other Uplift Foundation members, elected officials and event attendees pausing at 10:00 AM to honor Donald via press conference. Donald’s parents will also be available.

“This is the true essence of Uplift. Every kid who strives for excellence must be supported by a village of leaders from the community. I’m grateful for our fraternity, specifically the Chi Lambda Lambda Chapter, for our continued focus on enhancing the upward mobility of the minority community of Chicago.
